Curtain wall support systems are the structural framework that anchors a building's non-structural cladding to the main structure. Typically made from aluminum, steel, or galvanized steel for corrosion resistance, these supports must withstand wind loads, seismic forces, and the dead load of the cladding itself while transferring these forces to the building's foundation.
The system primarily consists of vertical members called mullions and horizontal members called transoms, which create a grid to hold the glass or panel infills. These are connected to the building structure through various bracketry and anchors that allow for adjustment during installation and accommodate thermal expansion and building movement. Common types include stick systems (assembled piece-by-piece on-site) and unitized systems (pre-assembled panels installed as single units). Proper design and material selection are critical for ensuring the facade's weather resistance, structural safety, and long-term durability.
